Velveeta & Salsa Classic Queso

⏱️ Prep Time: 5 minutes • 🍳 Cook Time: 10 minutes

There's nothing quite like the creamy, melty Velveeta and salsa queso my mom used to make when we were kids. It’s the ultimate snack, perfect for lazy movie nights, game day parties, or just when you need a little taste of home.

Back when I was a kid, I swear this queso showed up at every gathering we ever had — from birthday parties to random Tuesday nights. Mom would always pull out the big yellow block of Velveeta, crack open a jar of salsa, and like magic, we'd have a bubbling pot of cheesy goodness in no time. It was one of those dishes that didn’t need fancy ingredients or complicated techniques — just pure, simple joy.

One of the best things about this old-school queso is how endlessly versatile it is. Feeling spicy? Use a hot salsa. Want it chunkier? Toss in a can of drained Rotel instead. Dress it up with cilantro, or jalapenos!

If you’ve never had Velveeta and salsa queso before, let me tell you: you’re in for something delicious. It's creamy without being heavy, salty in the best way, and absolutely perfect for scooping onto chips or drizzling over nachos. You’re gonna want to keep this recipe on hand!

🍽️ Servings: 8 • 🔥 Calories/Serving: 190

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (16 oz) Velveeta cheese

  • 1 cup salsa (your favorite brand or homemade)

  • 2 tbsp milk (optional, for thinning)

  • Tortilla chips for serving

Steps

Step 1

Cut the Velveeta into small cubes for easier melting.

Step 2

Place the Velveeta cubes and salsa into a medium saucepan.

Step 3

Heat over medium-low, stirring frequently, until the cheese is completely melted and the salsa is fully incorporated.

Step 4

If the queso is too thick for your liking, stir in milk a tablespoon at a time until it reaches your desired consistency.

Step 5

Transfer to a serving bowl (or a mini slow cooker to keep it warm) and serve immediately with tortilla chips.

Make it your own!

  • 🌶️ Spice it up Use a hot salsa or add diced jalapeños for an extra kick!

  • 🍅 Chunk it up Swap salsa for a can of Rotel (diced tomatoes and green chilies) for a chunkier texture.

  • 🥑 Make it deluxe Stir in some cooked ground beef or chorizo to turn it into a heartier queso dip.

  • 🧄 Boost the flavor Add a dash of garlic powder, cumin, or smoked paprika while it melts for a smoky twist.
