Making the Most of a Small Balcony
When I first saw my apartment, the balcony was one of the things that sold me on the space.
It’s fairly large for a city apartment and overlooks the skyline. I remember standing out there during the showing, looking around and imagining what it could become. Morning coffee. A quiet place to sit outside. Having friends over on a warm evening.
But when I moved in, it was just a concrete slab.
If you live in an apartment or condo, you know how valuable every square foot is. Rent isn’t cheap. If you’re lucky enough to have outdoor space, you want it to feel like part of your home.
I wanted this to be somewhere Olive and I could spend time. A place to sit outside with my coffee, eat dinner when the weather is nice, or host a friend for wine or mocktails.
So I started slowly turning it into a space that felt welcoming.
Now it’s easily one of my favorite places in the apartment.
Starting with the Floor

The first thing I tackled was the concrete floor.
Concrete is practical, but it’s cold and gray. It didn’t exactly make you want to step outside and stay there.
I knew right away I wanted to soften the space and make it feel more like an outdoor room. Something that felt like an extension of my studio rather than an afterthought.
I found wooden deck tiles on Amazon that snap together and laid them across the entire floor. It made an immediate difference. The space instantly felt warmer and more finished. I didn’t mind stepping out there in my bare feet anymore.
If you’re working with a balcony or patio, flooring is one of the biggest upgrades you can make. Deck tiles are great because they’re renter-friendly and don’t require permanent installation.
Measure your space carefully before ordering. Balconies are rarely perfect dimensions, so you may end up with a small border along the edge. That’s normal. Some people leave it as-is, while others fill the gap with decorative stones or planters to make it look intentional.
A Little Patch of Grass for Olive

Next, I added something just for Olive.
She loves grass, but living in the city we don’t see much of it day to day. Sometimes I take her down to the National Mall and let her run around. The moment she finds a patch of grass she starts rubbing her head in it and rolling around like it’s the greatest thing on earth.
I wanted her to have a little spot like that at home.
So I bought small artificial turf tiles that click together and made a grassy corner on the balcony. I zip tied the tiles together and secured them to the partition so they wouldn’t shift or blow around in the wind.
Even though it’s artificial, she treats it like the real thing. On warm days she stretches out and sunbathes. It’s her own little lawn.
Watching her enjoy it made the whole setup feel worth it.
If you have a dog, adding a soft patch like this can make your outdoor space much more enjoyable for them. Turf tiles work well because they drain easily and can be removed or rearranged if needed.
People sometimes ask if she goes to the bathroom on it.
Thankfully, she does not.
A Small Table for Two
The small table and chairs are perfect for a relaxed evening meal outside.
Once the floor and Olive’s grass patch were in place, I wanted somewhere simple to sit.
I added a small two-person table and chair set so I could have coffee outside or eat a meal when the weather is nice. It doesn’t take up much space, but it immediately made the balcony feel more functional.
Some mornings I bring my coffee out there and sit for a bit while the city is still quiet. Other times it’s dinner outside when the weather is perfect and it feels like a waste to stay indoors.
If you’re furnishing a small balcony or patio, a compact table set is a great place to start. Even a tiny bistro table makes the space feel intentional and gives you a reason to step outside more often.
The Couch That Made It a Place to Stay
A comfortable couch that fits the space makes all the difference.
The real centerpiece of the balcony, though, is the sectional couch.
I measured the space carefully and found an outdoor L-shaped sofa with a chaise that fits perfectly along one side. Now Olive and I can stretch out there together, and when friends come over there’s actually somewhere comfortable to sit and talk.
On warm evenings we sit out there and watch the planes pass overhead while the city lights start coming on.
If you have the space for it, comfortable seating is what turns an outdoor area into somewhere you genuinely want to spend time. Even a loveseat or bench with cushions can completely change how often you use the space.
Once you have a place where you can sit back and relax, you start lingering a lot longer.
Lighting Makes Everything Better
The ivy privacy screen makes the balcony feel a little more like a hideaway.
To make the space feel cozy at night, I strung warm globe lights along the railing.
Lighting makes a huge difference outdoors. Once the sun goes down it completely changes the atmosphere.
For balconies or patios, outdoor-rated string lights are an easy upgrade. They’re simple to install and instantly make the space feel softer and more inviting.
My balcony shares a divider with my neighbor’s, so I also added faux ivy along the partition using zip ties. It gives us both a little more privacy and adds some greenery.
It’s a small detail, but it makes the space feel more tucked away and comfortable.
Adding Greenery
A bit of low-maintenance greenery along the railing helps the space feel cozy.
Where I live, winters can be very cold and the summers can get extremely hot, I didn’t want to worry about maintaining outdoor plants that might not survive the seasons.
So I added hanging planters along the railing and filled them with artificial boxwood plants.
They still give the balcony a lush, green look without needing constant care.
If your outdoor space gets a lot of wind or intense sun, artificial greenery can be a great solution. The goal is simply to soften the space and bring in a little life.
The Small Details That Pull It Together
A few smaller touches made the balcony feel complete.
Outdoor pillows on the couch make it more comfortable and inviting. Weather-resistant fabrics hold up much better outside.
I also keep a small Bluetooth speaker out there. Sitting outside with a little music playing in the background makes the whole space feel even more relaxing.
None of these things are complicated, but together they create an atmosphere that makes you want to stay awhile.
Outdoor pillows make the couch more comfortable and help bring that indoor feeling outside.
Making the Most of the Space You Have
What started as a plain concrete balcony has slowly become one of my favorite parts of the apartment.
Some mornings it’s coffee and quiet before the city wakes up. Some evenings it’s Olive stretched out in the sun while planes pass overhead.
It’s a small space, but it changed how I use my home.
If you have a balcony, patio, or even just a small outdoor corner, it doesn’t take much to turn it into somewhere you genuinely enjoy spending time.
A few thoughtful changes can make the difference between a space you walk past every day and one you look forward to using.
