Trader Joe’s Vegetable Samosa Chaat
⏱️ Prep Time: 15 minutes • 🍳 Cook Time: 18 minutes
I first had samosa chaat earlier this year at Charga Grill, which is a restaurant I love to go to. I had never had it before, even though I had had samosas plenty of times, and I immediately fell in love with it.
Now it’s the thing I order every time.
A nice and easy base for this dish is Trader Joe’s mini vegetable samosas. If you want something a little heartier, you could also try it with the mini chicken tikka samosas. The traditional version is vegetarian, but the chicken version works well too if you are extra hungry.
Broken chicken tikka samosas layered with chickpeas, yogurt, and chutneys in a messy, saucy bowl.
The samosas are the base here. I like to cook them until the outside is lightly crisp, then break them up directly over the chickpeas so you get a mix of filling and pastry in every bite. It’s not meant to stay neat.
The sauces are what bring everything together. The yogurt is thinned into a quick sauce so it drizzles over everything, and the chutneys add sweetness and a little tang. Once everything is layered, it turns into something that looks a little messy but tastes balanced.
This is one of those recipes you can adjust as you go. Add more sauce, less onion, or whatever you have on hand. It comes together quickly and doesn’t need much precision.
Ingredients
🍽️ Servings: 2–3 • 🔥 Calories/Serving: 480 • 💪 Protein/Serving: 20g
1 box Trader Joe’s Mini Vegetable Samosas
1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
½ cup plain Greek yogurt
1–2 tbsp water
pinch salt
¼ cup tamarind chutney (or sweet chili sauce or BBQ sauce with a squeeze of lemon)
¼ cup cilantro chutney (or green goddess dressing or chopped cilantro with lime)
¼ cup red onion, finely chopped
2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
Steps
Step 1
Cook the samosas according to package instructions until heated through and lightly crisp on the outside.
Step 2
Warm the chickpeas in a small pan over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes until heated through. (They should be warm but not dry.)
Step 3
In a small bowl, mix the yogurt with water and a pinch of salt until smooth and pourable. (It should drizzle easily off a spoon.)
Step 4
Spoon the chickpeas into a bowl or shallow plate.
Step 5
Using a fork, break the samosas into pieces directly over the chickpeas. (Some larger chunks are fine. You want a mix of filling and pastry.)
Step 6
Drizzle the yogurt over the top, then drizzle with tamarind chutney and cilantro chutney.
Step 7
Finish with red onion and chopped cilantro. Serve right away.
Make it your own!
🌶 Spicy version: Add chili flakes or hot sauce for extra heat.
🥒 Extra crunch: Add diced cucumber.
🍋 Brighter flavor: Add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice before serving.
